Short Bio

Born as a Javanese-Indonesian, I am an independent Natural Language Processing researcher and a self-initiative learner-person. I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Utrecht University, Europe, in October 2012 (Analysis Data Algorithmic / Data Mining)*. My M.Sc. is in computer science (cum laude). I was awarded the Best Student for Master of Computer Science from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta (postgrad graduation ceremony, January 2003). I was authoring a book on artificial neural networks (2006)**. Besides being a Computer Scientist, I am also an international reviewer (2021-now, Elsevier Journal).

* 1st batch of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology for Overseas Doctoral Scholarship award (2007)

** I presented the book twice at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) (1999)

My recent years' interests are deep learning on NLP and being open to other topics in recommendation systems. Mostly is how to improve the performance of retrieval systems both in an individual and in a meta-search engine. Searching, routing, ranking, and evaluation are enhanced by understanding pattern association in data and user information needs. Data Mining and Machine Learning/AI techniques, together with IR, are three keywords used to boost the system's enhancement. In the past, I worked in compression data (data mining) to use any query modeling and recommendation systems involving social media tags.

In the last eight years, I get deeply involved in Information Retrieval researches. NLP (Natural Language Processing) is my specialization.

One of my latest researches (published 2022) is abstract summarization using ProphetNet, Pegasus, and T5.

Another latest research (June 2021) is a study about machine translations and their fine-tuning strategies. Approaches that I investigated are Sequential-to-sequential (Seq2Seq), Convolutional Seq2Seq (ConvSeq2Seq), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and Multi-head Attention (MHA).

My publications span several ranges of reputable conferences:

    • Rank A+: the International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR),
    • Rank A: the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML PKDD), and
    • Rank A: the Intelligent Data Analysis Symposium (IDA).
  • Other publications were published in ACM, Springer or indexed in IEEE Xplore, and Scopus.
